The Sunday Dread: When Anxiety About Work Starts Taking Over Your Life

It’s Sunday afternoon.

Technically, you’re still on your weekend.

But somewhere around 3 or 4pm, something changes.

Your mind starts drifting towards tomorrow.

The emails waiting for you. The people you have to deal with. The workload. The meetings. The patients. The deadlines. The commute. That difficult colleague. That never-ending list of things you haven’t quite managed to get on top of.

And suddenly, Sunday doesn’t feel like Sunday anymore.

You might feel a heaviness in your stomach. A tightness in your chest. Perhaps you become irritable or restless. You can’t quite concentrate on the film you’re watching or enjoy the time you’re spending with your family.

Your body may be at home.

But your mind is already at work.

Welcome to the Sunday dread.

When Did Sunday Stop Being Part of the Weekend?

Occasionally feeling reluctant to go back to work after a lovely weekend is completely understandable.

But there’s a difference between thinking, “I’d rather have another day off” and experiencing genuine anxiety about going back.

Perhaps you start checking your work emails.

You mentally rehearse conversations that haven’t happened yet.

You lie awake thinking about everything you need to do.

Maybe you wake at 3am and immediately start thinking about work.

And sometimes the anxiety begins even earlier.

Sunday evening becomes Sunday afternoon.

Then Sunday morning.

Eventually, you realise that a large part of your precious time away from work is being consumed by worrying about going back.

The Problem Isn’t Always Monday

We often call it the Sunday dread, but Monday isn’t necessarily the real problem.

Sometimes it’s what Monday represents.

Pressure.

Responsibility.

Expectations.

Feeling trapped.

Feeling that you can never do enough.

Fear of getting something wrong.

Or simply the knowledge that you’re about to spend another week giving more of yourself than you feel you have left to give.

This can be particularly difficult for people in caring professions.

When other people’s wellbeing depends on you, switching off isn’t always easy.

You can leave the building at the end of your shift, but sometimes your mind doesn’t leave with you.

Why Can’t I Just Stop Thinking About Work?

This is where we can be incredibly hard on ourselves.

“Why can’t I just relax?”

“Why am I worrying about something that hasn’t even happened?”

“I should be enjoying my weekend.”

But telling yourself to stop worrying rarely works.

Because anxiety isn’t simply a logical thought that you can switch off.

Your mind is designed to protect you.

If it has started associating work with pressure, criticism, conflict, overwhelm or fear, it can begin preparing you for that perceived threat before you’ve even arrived.

That’s why you can know logically that you’re sitting safely on your sofa on Sunday evening while your body feels as though Monday morning has already arrived.

Could There Be Something Deeper Going On?

Sometimes work genuinely is the problem.

An overwhelming workload, poor management, unrealistic expectations or a difficult environment can affect anyone.

But sometimes our reaction to work is intensified by beliefs we’ve carried for much longer.

Maybe you believe you have to get everything right.

Perhaps criticism feels unbearable.

Maybe disappointing somebody makes you feel deeply uncomfortable.

Perhaps saying no feels selfish.

You may constantly worry about what other people think of you.

Or perhaps you’ve spent years measuring your worth by how productive, helpful or successful you are.

These beliefs can quietly drive perfectionism, people-pleasing, overthinking and anxiety.

And because they often operate automatically, you may not even realise how much they’re affecting you.

Your Weekend Is Part of Your Life Too

There’s something I really want you to remember.

You weren’t put on this earth simply to recover from one working week so that you’re capable of surviving the next one.

Your evenings matter.

Your weekends matter.

Your relationships matter.

Your dreams matter.

You matter.

Work can be an important part of your life without being allowed to consume your life.

And if anxiety about work is regularly stealing the time when you’re supposed to be living, it may be worth looking at what’s really going on underneath it.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Work Anxiety

This is one of the reasons I love the work I do with Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT).

Rather than simply telling yourself to “stop worrying”, RTT allows us to explore the beliefs and experiences that may be sitting beneath the anxiety.

Why do you feel you have to be perfect?

Why does somebody else’s opinion carry so much weight?

Why can’t you switch off?

Why do you feel responsible for everything?

Why does saying no feel so difficult?

When we begin to understand where these patterns came from, we can start changing the beliefs that have been running quietly in the background.

The aim isn’t to make you better at tolerating something that’s making you unhappy.

It’s to help you feel differently within yourself — calmer, more confident, more able to create boundaries and more able to make choices from a place of clarity rather than fear.

Imagine Getting Your Sundays Back

Imagine reaching Sunday evening and realising you haven’t spent the entire day thinking about Monday.

Imagine going to bed without mentally running through tomorrow’s problems.

Imagine being able to finish work and actually leave work at work.

Imagine having energy for the people and things you love.

And imagine waking up without that familiar knot in your stomach.

That might feel a long way away right now.

But anxiety doesn’t have to be your permanent way of living.

Sometimes the Sunday dread is your mind’s way of telling you that something needs attention.

Maybe it’s time to listen.

If work anxiety, overthinking or burnout is beginning to take over your life, I offer a free 30-minute discovery call where we can talk about what’s happening, what you’d like to change and whether RTT and hypnotherapy could help.

Because Sunday should still feel like part of your weekend — not the beginning of Monday.
